Tile grout is a chemical product used to bond and fill gaps between individual tiles. Its purpose is to prevent water leakage that could potentially damage the underlying surface. It is used to decorate and create a seamless and beautiful appearance in the gaps between tiles. The application of tile grout is not as complicated as one might think and can be done even without experience. Let's take a look at how to do it.
How to use tile grout
1. Gouge old tile grouts and clean the surfaces
Remove deteriorated tile grouts using a grout remover, cutter knife, or nail, and ensure proper cleaning of the area. In the case of new tiling, it is recommended to allow the tile adhesive to dry for at least 24-48 hours before proceeding.
2. Mix tile grout with water in a ratio of 3 : 1
Mix Beger Tile-Bond Plus with water in a ratio of 3 (1 kilogram): 1 (0.35 liters).
3. Stir thoroughly
Mix the components thoroughly using a wooden paddle, trowel, or low-speed drill, and then allow the grout to sit for approximately 3-5 minutes to allow the chemical reaction with water to occur.
4. Spread the grout to the gaps
Use a trowel to apply the tile grout onto the rubber trowel, and then spread the grout along the gaps using a technique called a 60-degree angle spread. It ensures that the grout fills the gaps completely and does not pull the grout out of the gaps.
5. Leave the grout dry and clean the surfaces
After applying the grout, let it set for approximately 2-4 hours. Then, remove any excess grout with a damp sponge or cloth and use a dry cloth to clean and polish the surface. It should leave the grout to dry completely for at least 24 hours to improve adhesion before using the area.
How many square meters can a bag of tile grout cover?
Normally, 1 kilogram of tile grout covers approximately 5-6 sq.m., depending on the tiles' size and the gaps' width. If they are larger, you will need to apply more tile grout. Let's look at the details in the table below:
Example of calculating the quantity of tile grout
If you need to apply tile grout for a standard-sized bathroom floor measuring 2.4 x 1.5 meters, which equals a total area of 3.6 sq.m., with tiles sized 30x30 cm. and a grout spacing of 3 mm, you will need a total of 0.10 kg of grout per sq.m. according to the table.
So, for an area of 3.6 sq.m., you will need a total of 3.6 x 0.10 kg = 0.36 kg. 1 bag of grout will be sufficient.
